Skip Vs Grab Lorry
Dec 21, 2016
When you are planning any home reconstruction or even building work, you also need to consider how you are going to get rid of the waste.
Two popular options are those of the skip and grab lorry.
Below we explain the difference between the two methods, and when they should be used.
What is the difference between the two?
Individuals can become very confused as to the differences between a skip and a grab lorry.
A skip can come in a variety of sizes, from the mini skip for small amounts of waste, right up to large industrial rolling skips. They are stationary and, if, on the road, you will need a permit.
A grab lorry is mobile and is often used for a short period of time. As the name suggests, it grabs large amounts of waste and stores them in the lorry, ready for disposal.
Which method is more convenient?
This very much depends upon what type of waste needs to be disposed of, plus the amount of waste.
Generally, though, the grab lorry is thought to be the most convenient option for everyone involved.
As the grab lorry is mobile, there should be minimal disruption to the road outside your home, or building site, while the work is done, as opposed to a skip which is permanent. In terms of labour, the grab lorry uses no manual labour, unlike the skip, as the arm of the lorry does all of the hard work.
Finally, clearing the waste is a much smoother process, as a large amount of waste can be put into the lorry, quickly, whereas filling a skip is a slow and time-consuming process.
When you should use a skip
A skip is perfect for those small DIY jobs at home, or when the waste is small and easy to place into the skip.
Such tasks as those of gardening, room decorating and plastering jobs should only require the use of a skip.
As long as the debris is easy to carry, and not too heavy, then a skip will be suitable.
When you should use a grab lorry
The grab lorry is perfect for those large industrial and building jobs. Perhaps you are knocking down walls and having an extension to your home. Or you may have decided to have a kitchen refurbished, so will be ripping out units and disposing of furniture.
For any big job, such as these, you really need the service of a grab lorry. Waste will be disposed of quickly and with minimum disruption.
The general rule of thumb is that if you need a lot of waste to be removed, then opt for the grab lorry option.
